About Diana Burton
Virginia Waterfront Real Estate Agent
Diana Burton moved in 2000 to the United States from The Netherlands where she had lived most of her life, with her husband, a well-known American astronomy professor who had spent most of his professional life in The Netherlands.
Diana had owned several real estate companies in The Hague, The Netherlands, since 1973, culminating in co-ownership and managing a large real estate company, specialized in serving the expatriate community in The Netherlands, with a staff of 26 agents. After moving to Virginia, Diana spent a few years teaching French and History in a Gloucester private middle school, and at Rappahonnack Community College. Diana then returned to real estate and built up an impressive Virginia waterfront portfolio, being a consistently platinum producer in her area.
Diana has had a dual career, one in real estate, the other in teaching history.
She holds a Bachelors Degree in Dutch History, a Masters Degree and ABD in American Colonial History from the University of Leyden, The Netherlands. She also holds a French teaching degree from the University of Grenoble, France.
During her career in The Netherlands Diana was able to use her knowledge of American and Dutch History to give seminars to newcomers to The Netherlands to help ease their culture shock and was regularly invited as a lecturer or seminar leader by the City of The Hague, the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs, and by various multinational companies and international organizations.
She also participated on various trade missions of the Mayor of The Hague to America and Canada. In her business capacity Diana was member of the Board of the American Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands, Board member of the Dutch-British Chamber of Commerce, and President of the English –Dutch Business Club.
In her Virginian real estate career,
Diana has been able to combine her love for American colonial history with her deep interest in the gorgeous historic homes and estates on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and tributary rivers.
She has also enjoyed practicing what she preached to the real estate agents working for her in The Netherlands: that if you are in real estate, you are 100% committed to giving service to your clients.
The Burton family has 4 children and 7 grandchildren, all now residing in the United States. Diana is an avid reader, be it history or great fiction, and a passionate equestrian, having trained in advanced Dressage. She herself lives in a historic Virginia Waterfront home on the shores of the East River, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.
Shelley and I are writing this to thank you for your help in our purchase of our new second home in Mathews. Everything was handled in a very smooth and professional way. We love the house and hope you will come visit soon and see our renovations.

"I feel very fortunate that we "found" Diana, and I cannot recommend her strongly enough. Her knowledge and expertise of the market and the area were immediately evident, but I was most impressed by the time she took to really get to know me and my family, and with her unwavering commitment to making sure that we found the perfect home for us. Diana's level of service is, unfortunately, an increasingly rare find these days – she truly cares about her clients and it is evident in everything she does. I can not imagine loving a place at the River more than the one she found for us, but if we ever decide to sell, my first call will be to Diana."
